Short Review: Archos eReader 70b

I've bought the Archos eReader 70b last week for my g/f, mainly for reading e-books and watching videos, and occasionally surfing the web and other stuff. Bear with me, it's my first Android device I played wth.

I have to say: she is happy and I'm too.

* At home we're working with three Operating Systems, my Linux desktop, her iMac, her Windows XP netbook and my MacBook Air. Connect the eReader to any of our computers with the included USB cable, and within second it's mounted, and one can copy stuff over.
* DRM books are working as well. We only tested it with loaned books from the Amsterdam public library.
* I've installed as additions: Astro Filemanager 2.5.2, Opera Mini (newest version from the Opera site), Dolphin HD 5.1, AndSMB (for samba browsing our network at home and copying stuff over without USB cable), mvideoplayer (for playing videos with subtitles, works!).
I've tested Aldiko (also the newer version) and Moon+ reader, but deleted it because the pre-installed reader app is fine. Angry Birds works, but is much too slow -p
* I think that the special desktop (books and library etc) is best if you want to use it mainly for reading books.
* The YouTube.apk I've found (google for Archos eReader YouTube.apk), I think it's a version for Android 2.1, works very well. Plays all YT videos.
* The Samba app is very nice, connects to my shared directories on my Linux PC without problems.
* The pre-installed video and audio codecs are ++++ :)

Hardware
* WiFi works at home and at a friend's house, even with two doors in-between (but with lower signal strength than my MacBook Air)
* The screen is resistive, for the price decent, tapping is ok but scrolling is a pain. You don't need to very often, though. Screen is pretty good for reading and for videos.
* The rendering of webpages while surfing is of course slower than on a notebook or desktop or a high-priced tablet, but it's more than decent I believe.
* The hardware buttons on the left and right for flipping pages on a book are a plus.
* Audio quality with the included earphones is astonishing.
* Included in my package: Power Charger (with two adapters, for continental Europe and the UK), USB cable, earphones, user guide.
* 4 GB internal disk space is more than enough for thousands of books. You can extend it with a SD card up to 32 GB.

Price: 110 ~ 129 Euro, comes with a 2 years warranty.

* What is the punishment for trashing such a lovable and beautifully layered character as Pernille/Mitch Larsen? And excuse me, exploiting grief?

All my love to Michelle Forbes who seems to withstand the disrespect and dishonesty. Her performance in The Killing as Mitch Larsen is great, against all odds.

Weihnachten schon im November

Dieses Jahr kommt Weihnachten schon im November. Mir selbst habe ich ein funkelnagelneues MacBook Air (11.6 inch) geschenkt, für die Couch und aufm Bett, für Internet und Serien/Filme schauen. Es ist einfach zum Verlieben. So ein schönes, schnelles, leises und grandios funktionierendes Teil hatte ich noch nie. - Nach einer Woche hat sich Birgit einen iMac gekauft, haha. Na endlich.

Und dann kam aus Montreal ein Päckchen von Back Alley Film, das Durham County Plakat mit Michelle Forbes, nachdem sie mir schon vor Wochen -einfach so- die DVD Season 2 geschenkt hatten. Ich bin so berührt, konnte ich doch nicht zu dieser Toronto-Convention reisen. Und da ich doch sonst nie irgendetwas geschenkt bekomme.

Und Ekström (herrlich, so ein Alter Ego) ist jetzt auch glücklich, na ja fast. Er wartet sehnsüchtig auf das nächste Projekt von Michelle Forbes.

Linux only, mit Mandriva 2010.1 Spring. Leider wird die embedded Intel GPU noch nicht richtig konfiguriert mit Linux, dauert wohl noch paar Monate, bis alle Treiber so weit sind, habe darum eine Asus Nvidia 8400GS (silent, passiv gekühlt) zusätzlich engebaut.

Das Ding ist schnell und LEISE. Unhörbar.

Sail Amsterdam, the spectacular event held every 5 year, kicked off yesterday with the Sail-In Parade, the traditional parade from IJmuiden to Amsterdam featuring over 50 tall ships, replicas and modern yachts. Hundreds of ships accompanied the procession on its way to mooring places along the IJ river.

"She (Michelle Forbes) played the role of Verity with such humanity and intensity that you totally understood her actions, even while finding yourself repulsed by them.
You see her doing reprehensible things, and yet much like Ray Prager in Season 1, you can almost see the method to the madness. And with Verity there was a definite sense of madness about her, a result of trauma in her past.
At one moment you find yourself empathizing with what she's gone through and what she's currently going through, and then you see her poisoning some chocolates to harm someone close to Mike and your feelings change, and you see that this same person you're sympathizing with earlier you can see her in her full on evil mode, and then you can STILL feel for her later in scenes where she's falling apart. It takes a special kind of actress to pull that off, and not just make a one dimensional villain.
Her confrontation with Mike after he finds out what she did with the chocolates stands out as my favorite scene of Season 2, and it is a nice showdown between two very strong willed actors."

The multimedia ebook, compatible with all operating systems and all browsers. No need to install anything, no special hardware nor software, no Internet connection needed.
Just some simple html text files and sub-directories with audio, video and image files.
588 MB, 465 pictures, more than 150 (enhanced) articles from mirandazero.blogspot.com, 44 videos in H264/mp4 format, 28 audio interviews and music.
Video and audio embedded with a small but beautiful flash (and mp4) player.
It's FAST since everything is loaded locally, from CD or DVD, or from USB stick, or from hard disk.
Usable also as a presentation :)

Anyone - with a bit of HTML skills - would be able to change the ebook, add articles etc.
Actually, it's a simplistic and no-nonsense set up, pure in HTML.

* In total: 150 articles from Miranda Zero Blog, tons of videos, pictures, audio interviews.
* You can run this e-book in any browser and any Operating System. Just copy the directories to your hard disk or on a USB stick, or burn a CD or DVD. Heck, you can even copy them to a webserver if you own a domain and webspace.
For MS/IE user: If you run the e-book of your hard disk, you may get a warning about scripts. Click on: trust this site. - IE doesn't like the Mediaplayer javascript. You can trust it, it's Open Source :)
* This is an offline e-book. No internet connection needed, all multimedia files are included locally and will load instantly. Only the links in the articles are web links.
* In the sub directories /img, /video and /audio you find all included files. The main directory contains the html files (just click on one to start the e-book). Don't start the few javascript programs, they run the mediaplayer (Open Source), for embedding video and audio. It's not a standalone mediaplayer!
* With some basic hmtl knowledge you can add pages to this book. Just use this file (as a sort of template). If you want to change the Look&Feel: have a look at the .css file in the main directory. - All videos are in mp4 format, audio in mp3.
